This is obviously a reference to The Wizard of Oz. There are no phone booths in the modern world, yet they were a fixture when I was growing up. Our existence was limited because there were no cell phones at everyone’s disposal. We communicated by looking each other in the eyes. Some of the young ladies that I grew up with made bad decisions. They lived in situations that reeked of desperation and depression. Some turned to drugs and alcohol. A few abandoned their children and sought pleasure over responsibility. A lucky few were able to return home. Have you ever been in a place where you could not see any redemption? Too bad these unfortunate women didn’t have those ruby slippers that would magically return them to a loving family. No… they were forced to live and die in Oz.
