Music Selection: “Last Date” by Floyd Cramer

This is a moody little painting. I took inspiration from a bust called Goggle Head by Dame Elisabeth Frink. He is waiting for someone when a tune by Floyd Cramer begins to play on the jukebox. To fully appreciate this painting, it should be viewed with this tune playing. All my paintings should be viewed while listening to music because I always paint with music in the background.

The background is ambiguously chaotic. The clock is striking five past six. Is that in the morning and his date was a no show and to add insult to injury the jukebox plays Last Date? Is he early for the meeting and suddenly as the song begins does the reality of his pending relationship set in? Why is the bottle unopened? Is he remembering a lost love triggered by this old piano melody? Is he meeting a lost love and is stiffened by the tune on the jukebox? What does this painting mean to you? Can you hear the piano? Can you smell the dank musty smell of cigarettes, stale perfume, and booze?
