I loved the late seventies and eighties. Big hair, headbands, tube tops, long earrings, and dancing till the break of day. Okay… disco sucked but the nightlife was extraordinary. There was still a bit of innocence in the world, and the legal drinking age was eighteen. The eighties was one long party. Vietnam was behind us and the future was limitless.

I’ve always loved Vermeer’s paintings. I was looking at “The Girl with a Pearl Earring” when I got the inspiration for this painting. Everyone asks, “What is she thinking, or where is she going?” I thought what if she was an eighties girl going out on the town. Turquois was popular in the disco era along with dangling earrings, so big hair, headbands, tube tops, and turquois earrings made the painting.  No pearls for my girl.

The background is chaotic, energetic, and angry like the times. Only one single light illuminates the moment. Everyone ponders what the character in Vermeer’s painting is thinking. I don’t think reading the girl in my painting’s thoughts will be all that difficult. PRARTY,PARTY,PARTY!
