In life you will always face challenges. Not many will be as large as David’s. This painting was done for my youngest son. It hangs in his bedroom. As he was growing up, he faced different challenges than I did going to school.  When the bully gave you some static, you smacked him in the face. This ended the bullying and sometimes began a friendship. Bullies today are cowards and hide behind a keyboard. I must admit there is an odd pleasure watching your bully bleed. My training began when I was tall enough to hit dad’s makeshift punching bag. After high school I gravitated to the martial arts and have trained ever since.

In the background you can see the hands of those watching the battle. I never had a fight without spectators, and neither did David, so I painted it so the viewer and others holding spears looked on. One spectator’s hand directs your eyes to the conflict. The sun is a burning red ember pinwheeling rays of light down on the battlefield wrapped in the chaos below. The moment the giant was struck the world changed and David stepped into history. I want my son to believe he too can take on the giants and win.
