Music Selection: “Hummingbird” by Seals and Croft
I painted a canvas while in college, and called it Group Dynamics. I gave the painting to my Group Dynamics professor. The painting was of several daisies with their stems intertwined. They twisted and pushed, yet they survived in the sun. They live in a symbiotic world, yet they tried to maintain their individualism. My wife told me later that she loved that painting, but she never said anything about it before I gave it away. Yes… I was sucking up to the prof. This is not a reproduction of that work, but it has elements that the other painting contained. It is called the Hummingbird because of my wife’s love of these creatures. It is about the struggle for life in the sun. You can see the roots of the flowers pushing downward while the stems push upwards. Some flowers grow high, and others bloom early, but all die in the end. The best we can hope for is to have someone appreciate us during this process. This is what the painting means to me, but what does it mean to you?
The background is pseudo realistic at the top and geometrically chaotic where the flowers are blooming. This is life. The natural world is static and solid, but the atmosphere surrounding us is a chaos of emotion.
